»In der Wüste verdorrt ein Traum.« Eine Zeitungsüberschrift war Anlass, die modernistische von Europa geprägte Stadt Aktau am kaspischen Meer aufzusuchen. Aktau, früher Schewtschenko, ist eine sowjetische Planstadt, die in den 1960er Jahren wegen Uranvorkommen in die Steppe gebaut wurde und sich jetzt nach der Unabhängigkeit Kasachstans mit einer euro-asiatischen Form des Kapitalismus weiter entwickelt. Eine Reise quer durch Europa beginnt, um die kulturellen Hintergründe und Verknüpfungen dieser Planstadt ausfindig zu machen. Herausgekommen ist ein kaleidoskopischer Science-Fiction-Bildroman über die Moderne als europäisches Phantasma und Potenzial. Das Buch enthält größtenteils ganzseitige Fotografien aus der Stadt Aktau, Zeichnungen zur Planung, zur Realisation und zur Erosion der Moderne und Texte aus Interviews mit Protagonisten des modernen Städtebaus der 60er Jahre, Architekten, Kunsthistorikern, Projektmanagern und Bewohnern aus Aktau und europäischen Städten wie St. Petersburg, Hoyerswerda, Tapiola und Sofia. Im Anhang werden Zusammenhänge erläutert und die neben der fotografischen Arbeit entstandenen Objekte, Installationen, Videos und Zeichnungen kurz vorgestellt.

«A dream withers in the desert.» A headline in a newspaper provided the inspiration to visit the modernist city of Aktau by the Caspian Sea. Aktau, formerly Shevshenko, this is an ideal Soviet new town built in the 1960's to exploit rich uranium deposits in the steppe. Now that Kazakhstan is independent the city is being transformed by a Eurasian version of capitalism. The volume is presented as a travelogue through Europe in search of the cultural background of this new town, its influences and correlations. The result is a multi-faceted illustrated science fiction novel about the modern age as a European phantasm and potential. Complete with photographs of the city, drawings and texts from interviews with architects, art historians, project managers and residents from Aktau and other European cities such as Sofia, Tapiola, St. Petersburg and Hoyerswerda.the book presents an insight into the implementation and erosion of modernist vision.
